Drawing a Pencilcolor

My abstract pencilcolor drawing begins with a line design drawn on canvasboard. I like the term     “pencilcolor” rather than colored pencil. Artists use watercolors for painting. They do not use “colored water” for painting.

I learned about design in a college course. Since then I have always used design as a base for my drawings. I use contrast, balance, center of interest, and rhythm to begin the drawing. Color is added last and I don’t plan the color arrangement. I put colors that look good together.

When I begin a drawing I do not know what the end result will be. I have to be in a mood to draw. I draw line after line that my eye enjoys seeing. I usually use a 10″ x 8″, a 12″ x 10″, or a 12″ x 16″ canvasboard. The small size helps me to see the whole design at a glance. I tried a 16″ x 20″ canvasboard and just couldn’t see the whole design at a glance. I had to view different sections.

After all the colors are added I view the drawing to see what pops out to me. I view all four sides. Most of the time I see four different ideas. My art comes from inside me. The lines, curves, and angles will remind me of something I have seen. Using my imagination is the part of my art that I enjoy most. I never know when a new form, idea, or object will pop into view.

Use your imagination when viewing my abstract art.
